Nepali man eyes new Everest record
KATHMANDU |
KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A 76-year-old Nepali man who hopes to become the oldest person to climb Mount Everest said on Sunday he wanted to encourage young people to climb mountains.
If successful to scale the 8,850 metre mountain, Min Bahadur Sherchan, who plans to leave for Everest in March, will be the oldest climber, a record now held by a 71-year-old Japanese man who climbed last year.
"I advise the young people to take inspiration from me," said Sherchan who wants to run a home for the old people after returning from the mountain.
Sherchan will be accompanied by a team of 12 Nepali sherpas, his expedition organizers said.
The mountain was first climbed by New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary, who died on Friday, together with Nepal's Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953.
