Medvedev: Russia not in crisis, calls for liquidity

MOSCOW, Sept 15 | Mon Sep 15, 2008 3:47pm IST

MOSCOW, Sept 15 (Reuters) - President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday Russia was not facing a financial crisis despite global financial turmoil but he called on the government to ensure sufficient liquidity on domestic financial markets.

"The task of the government at the present time is to ensure sufficient liquidity in the domestic market. This problem ... needs to be removed," Medvedev told a meeting of Russia's most influential business leaders.

"Despite all the global economic problems there are today, the situation in our economy is on the whole completely stable. We definitely have no crisis or pre-crisis situation," he said. (Reporting by Oleg Shchedrov and Toni Vorobyova, writing by Guy Faulconbridge, editing by Christian Lowe)
