One dead, dozens hurt in Bangladesh university clash
DHAKA |
DHAKA (Reuters) - Clashes erupted between two groups of university students in northern Bangladesh on Friday, and a man was killed and at least 50 injured, police and witnesses said.
The two groups aligned to the ruling Awami League party and the Jamaat-e-Islami were fighting for control of Rajshahi University, 270 km (160 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka
Students fought with sticks, stones and hurled crude bombs, a witness told Reuters by telephone.
Clashes frequently occur in the 20,000-strong campus of Rajshahi university, the country's third largest.
Authorities have closed the university indefinitely and asked students to vacate the living quarters.
Police and elite Rapid Action Battalion troopers were called in to restore order in the university.
