UK police get more time to quiz terrorism suspects

LONDON, April 15 | Wed Apr 15, 2009 11:06pm IST

LONDON, April 15 (Reuters) - British police investigating a suspected al Qaeda plot have been given more time to question 11 men arrested in raids last week across northwest England.

Seven can be quizzed for a further seven days and four can be held for two days, police said on Wednesday. Officers are still searching six properties in a case described by Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a "very big terrorist plot".

Counter terrorism police arrested 12 men last Wednesday including 11 Pakistanis -- all but one of whom had been in Britain on student visas.

The operation has caused a diplomatic spat between Britain and Pakistan over the measures in place to track the movements of extremists between the two countries.

Most terrorism plots in Britain since Sept. 11, 2001 have had links to Pakistan.

The 12th man -- an 18-year-old -- has been released into the custody of British border officials. (Reporting by Matt Falloon, editing by Tim Pearce)
