CHENNAI | Fri May 1, 2009 1:33pm IST

CHENNAI (Reuters) - Construction delays to venues for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi have pushed the Commonwealth shooting championships back by four months.

Indian officials confirmed on Friday that they requested a postponement for the event, originally scheduled for October this year, from the Commonwealth Shooting Federation (CSF) as the venue would not be ready in time.

"We had no option but to ask for fresh dates," Baljit Singh Sethi, secretary general of the National Rifle Association of India, told Reuters.

"We are happy that the CSF has accepted our request."

The competition will now be held from Feb. 20-28 next year, Sethi added.

Commonwealth Games organisers are under pressure because of delays in several projects for the multi-sports event, which will begin in October 2010.

Construction delays forced this year's world badminton championships to be moved to Hyderabad and the postponement of the Commonwealth boxing championships.
