Rapper Kanye West promises top frocks for red carpet

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Rapper Kanye West says he will be a top fashion designer making dresses worthy of the red carpet if he ever launches his own fashion label Past Tell.

"I know we are not allowed to use the race card any more since the election (of U.S. President Barack Obama) but let's pull the black card out one time; there is no black designer that you can name like this that designs dresses for the Oscars," the self-assured West said in an interview.

"Not only will I break out of the concept of the urban hip hop designer, I will design dresses that will end up on red carpets at the Oscars," he said.

West, who has said his rap will make him the voice of his generation, has long said he will launch a fashion label but has not said when his designs will be unveiled.

In April, New York magazine said his clothes could go on sale on the Internet soon, even though after a year of designing he has only produced three articles of clothing and a belt.

He has designed a Louis Vuitton sneaker which will be available in stores in June.

West said when he launches his fashion line, "it will be accessible also," offering everything from inexpensive T-shirts and denim jeans to haute couture. "I want to bring my opinion of what the best is."

He said despite reports he will not work as an intern to a famous designer to prepare for launching his own label. "I'm going to do my own brand. I want to learn as much as possible but I will learn in the process of doing my own brand."

The Grammy Award winning West, known for his hook-laden music and outspoken public statements on everything from race in America to Twitter, made his comments during an interview to promote his book "Thank You And You're Welcome."
