Nepal stops exiles from marching to Tibet, 34 held
KATHMANDU |
KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepali police detained 34 Tibetan refugees marching to the Tibet border on Friday, the latest crackdown on exiles demanding freedom for their Himalayan homeland.
Police said 26 men and eight women were picked up from Balesi, near the Friendship Bridge which lies on Nepal's border with China.
"We are waiting for instructions about what to do with the Tibetans," police officer Pramod Kharel said from Chautara, the nearest town.
A TV channel said the exiles were shouting 'Free Tibet' slogans when they were detained.
Nepal, where more than 20,000 exiled Tibetans live, is the second-biggest home for them outside Tibet after neighbouring India.
Nepal considers Tibet part of China and does not allow political activities by refugees.
