Mitsubishi Rayon freezes Thai resin plant expansion

TOKYO | Wed Dec 16, 2009 12:25pm IST

TOKYO Dec 16 (Reuters) - Japan's Mitsubishi Rayon 3404.T said on Wednesday that it has frozen plans to double production capacity at a Thai monomer plant it owns with SCG Chemicals, following a court order stopping all construction work in the Map Ta Phut petrochemical district due to environmental concerns.

Mitsubishi Rayon, which currently has a production capacity of 1.35 million tonnes of the acrylic resin used in cars, flat panel displays and flat TVs, is trying to work out how this will affect its earnings.

The plant now has production capacity of 90,000 tonnes of the material per year.
