U.S. gold rises on dollar retreat; platinum up

 NEW YORK, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. gold futures rose Monday
on dollar weakness and commodities gains, recouping some of
last week's losses, and strong exchange traded fund buying
boosted platinum group prices.

 GOLD
 * April GCJ0 up $4.60 at $1,088.40 an ounce at 9:57 a.m.
EST (1457 GMT) on COMEX division on NYMEX.
 * Range $1,077.20 to $1,090.80.
 * Bullion supported by dollar losses following a greenback
rally against euro last week. [USD/]
 * Gold futures finished January more than 1 percent lower
from Dec. 31 close of $1,097.60.
 * Sentiment improved after Obama projected U.S. budget
deficit to hit fresh record in 2010 - RBC. [ID:nN31157907]
 * Gold holding well considering weakness in grains, energy
and dollar's strength - Dennis Gartman, independent investor.
 * April contract currently hovering near 100-day moving
average support at $1,089.
 * CFTC data shows speculative investors scaled back
exposure, which weighed on prices - Barclays. [ID:nN29139311]
 * COMEX estimated 9 a.m. volume at 56,090 contracts.
 * Gold/oil ratio at 14.88, up from 14.84 the previous day.
 * Spot gold XAU= at $1,088.10, up from the previous
session's late quote of $1,079.20.
 * London afternoon gold fix XAUFIX= at $1,082.
 SILVER
 * March SIH0 up 12 cents at $16.310 an ounce, tagging
gold's gains.
 * Range $16.105 to $16.440.
 * COMEX estimated 9 a.m. volume at 14,095 lots.
 * Spot silver XAG= at $16.27, versus the previous
session's late quote of $16.16.
 * London silver fix XAGFIX= at $16.23.
 PLATINUM
 * April PLJ0 up $16.20, or 1.1 percent, at $1,522.20 on
investment demand related to exchange traded funds.
 * ETFS Platinum's (PPLT.P) holdings up 14 percent at
244,941 ounces as of Jan. 29; ETFS Palladium's (PALL.P)
holdings at 399,925 ounces.

 * March PAH0 up $12.35, or 3 percent, at $425 an ounce on
