Top Turkish judge calls reforms 'unconstitutional'
ANKARA |
ANKARA (Reuters) - A senior Turkish judge said on Monday that the government's proposed legal reforms were unconstitutional and failed to make the judiciary more independent.
Judge Hasan Gerceker, chief of the Supreme Court, said, in comments broadcast on NTV news channel, that the proposals were aimed at disempowering the judiciary.
His comments will heighten concerns that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's AK party, whose roots lie in political Islam, is heading towards a showdown with conservative, secularists in the judiciary.
The government says the proposed constitutional amendments are required to meet European Union membership criteria.
