BEIJING | Wed Jul 21, 2010 2:41pm IST

BEIJING (Reuters) - China expressed "deep concern" on Wednesday after the United States and South Korea said they would start large-scale joint military drills on July 25.

"We urge relevant parties to remain calm and exercise restraint and not do anything to exacerbate regional tensions," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

"We express deep concern about the relevant exercises," he added.

South Korea and the United States say the exercises aim to deter North Korea from any future attack, after Seoul blamed Pyongyang for the sinking of a South Korean warship in March.
