SINGAPORE, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Singapore attracted 883,000
foreign visitors in January, up 6.9 percent from a year ago, as
strong economic growth in the region and tourism campaigns
boosted air traffic, the government said on Tuesday.
Singapore has been promoting tourism as authorities try to
offset job losses resulting from the relocation of
manufacturers to countries such as China and Vietnam.
Vistors from Indonesia, China, Australia, India and Japan
acounted for 52 percent of visitors to Singapore in January,
the government said.
The Southeast Asian city-state attracted a record number of
10.3 million visitors in 2007, and wants to attract 17 million
people with S$30 billion ($21.4 billion) in tourism revenues a
year by 2015.
In a bid to attract more tourists, the Singapore government
is building two multi-billion dollar casinos, the world's
largest Ferris wheel, and this year is set to host the world's
first-ever Formula One street grand prix to be held at night.
