BRUSSELS, May 27 (Reuters) - European Union antitrust regulators will present guidelines early next month to help banks that are recipients of state aid return to viability, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The European Commission, tasked with ensuring that state aid does not distort competition in the 27-country European Union, will present the guidelines to senior EU finance ministry officials this week, the source said.

EU finance ministers will then review the guidelines before they are expected to be published in early June, the source said.

As the financial crisis deepened last September, the EU executive issued guidelines on how European countries could recapitalise stricken lenders, provide state guarantees and deal with impaired assets on banks' balance sheets.

It had approved more than 50 cases of bank rescue plans across Europe by May 20.
