TIMELINE - Global auto industry struggles since crisis hits
REUTERS - French carmakers speaking at the Reuters Autos Summit said they expected strong sales in the final months of 2009 as drivers flock to take advantage of government scrapping schemes before year end.
Below are some of the key events in a year of turmoil for the car industry:
Jan. 13, 2009 - Germany unveils a 1.5 billion euro ($2.2 billion) aid package, including 2,500 euro incentives for new car purchases, a month after the U.S. announces $17.4 billion lifeline to Detroit carmakers from the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief (TARP) programme.
Jan. 20 - Fiat and Chrysler strike a deal giving the Italian manufacturer a 35 percent stake in exchange for access to technology and overseas markets.
Feb. 6 - Italy unveils a $1.7 billion package to help its car sector, including a scrappage incentive similar to Germany's.
Feb. 9 - France pledges over 7 billion euros of support for its car industry.
Feb. 13 - Spain approves a 4 billion euro package that includes 1.2 billion euros in credit for car purchases during 2009 and 2010.
Feb. 17 - GM and Chrysler request nearly $22 billion in additional U.S. government loans.
