SANTIAGO, Oct 10 (Reuters) - The profitability of Chile's five private pension funds, a system long lauded as a regional benchmark, was hard hit in September as a global financial crisis spread, the sector's regulator said on Friday.

The value of the holdings of the so-called "A Fund", which heavily invested in shares and is considered the riskiest of the funds, tumbled 11.8 percent in September, the Superintendency of Pension Fund Administrators said. (Reporting by Antonio de la Jara; Editing by Tom Hals)
