Golf-India's Singh in fitness struggle for U.S. Open

CHENNAI, India, June 13 (Reuters) - India's Jeev Milkha Singh fears he may not recover from a muscle injury in time for next week's U.S. Open.

"I seem to have damaged my intercostal muscles during the final day of the European Open," he wrote on his website (www.jeevmilkhasingh.net). The world number 34 finished joint fifth in that event last month.

Although he finished in the top 10 at this month's Wales Open, Singh said the injury nearly forced him to pull out on the final day.

"This really puts a spanner in my plans. I was looking forward to playing the U.S. Open... I was hoping to put in a couple of practice rounds before the actual week started, but that looks extremely doubtful now.

"As things stand, I am having an MRI scan done in the States and depending on the results and the doctor's advice, I will take a decision whether to play the tournament on Saturday," added the player.

"Hopefully, everything will be all right by then."

Singh is grouped with Fijian Vijay Singh and South Korea's KJ Choi for the first two rounds of the U.S. Open at Bethpage, New York.
