ISLAMABAD, May 12 (Reuters) - Pakistan has raised its wheat import target to 2.5 million tonnes this year from 1.5 million tonnes to build strategic reserves, the prime minister's office said in a statement on Monday.

The government said last month it would import 1.5 million tonnes of wheat to meet domestic needs.

"Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani asked the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to import 2.5 million tonnes of wheat, including the 1.5 million tonnes already approved ... to build strategic reserves," the office said in a statement. (Reporting by Kamran Haider; Editing by Anshuman Daga)
