Verdi union says will oppose Postbank sale
FRANKFURT, March 1 (Reuters) - German public sector service union Verdi is to speak out against the planned sale of Deutsche Postbank (DPBGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) at a supervisory board meeting next Monday, the Euro am Sonntag paper said.
In a summary of a report due to be published on Sunday, the paper said that Verdi's representative on the supervisory board, Gerd Tausendfreund, argued that Postbank should stay separate.
"A healthy company such as Postbank with a pre-tax profit of one billion euros can exist on its own and should exist on its own," Tausendfreund was quoted as saying.
"So-called cross-selling effects, which are often used as an argument in favour of a link-up with another bank, can also be achieved via co-operation," he added.
Tausendfreund said a tie-up would cost jobs, especially in areas such as information technology.
Interested bidders in Postbank which is worth around 10 billion euros ($15.19 billion) include Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) Dand Commerzbank (CBKG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research).
