AUTOSHOW-Fiat may build cars in Mexico for U.S. market
GENEVA, March 4 (Reuters) - Fiat (FIA.MI: Quote, Profile, Research) may build its Alfa Romeo sports cars in Mexico for export to North America due to the weakening dollar, Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said on Tuesday.
Fiat has been looking at returning to the United States around 2009 and 2010 and is considering building its cars in the region given declines in the value of the dollar to the euro, which may make cars built in Italy too expensive in the U.S. market.
The company will decide this year where it will build its cars.
"It could be Mexico," Marchionne said when asked if the Italian carmaker could choose to locate a new plant there.
