UPDATE 1-TI to close Japan research center-Nikkei
NEW YORK, May 20 (Reuters) - Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to close a research and development center in Tsukuba, Japan, as early as the end of next month, the Japanese financial daily Nikkei said in its Thursday edition.
According to the story, TI plans to move some chip development from Tsukuba to India and the United States.
It will offer early retirement packages to roughly 100 researchers at the center, according to the story. A TI spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment.
TI, a supplier of chips for everything from cellphones to industrial equipment, said in April that about half of its expected $700 million reduction in expenses this year would come from cutbacks to research and development. (Reporting by Sinead Carew, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
