India's cotton output seen at 34.7 mln bales in 08/09

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India’s cotton production may rise to about 34.7 million bales in the year ending September 2009, a senior textile ministry official said on Tuesday.

The production outlook is 10 percent higher than this year’s estimate of 31.5 million bales, J.N. Singh joint secretary, ministry of textiles, told Reuters.

Cotton Advisory Board, which comprises of government and trade officials, on Saturday revised cotton production estimates for 2007/08 to 31.5 million bales from an earlier estimate of 31 million bales.

The textiles minister had also said earlier this month cotton production may touch 35 million bales for the year ending September 2009. The cotton year runs October through September.

The board has also raised its export estimate by 30.7 percent to 8.5 million bales in the current year from earlier estimates of 6.5 million bales.
