Australia win two lbw appeals after England run feast

LONDON (Reuters) - Australia won two lbw appeals in the afternoon session of the opening day of the first Ashes test against England on Thursday after the home side had threatened to run riot.

Mitchell Johnson dismissed Alastair Cook for 95 and Ben Hilfenhaus trapped Ravi Bopara for 18. England were 224 for two with captain Andrew Strauss on 91.

* Australia off-spinner Nathan Hauritz was forced to leave the field after dislocating the middle finger on his right hand trying to catch a fierce drive by Strauss.

* Strauss and Cook took England to 126 for no wicket at lunch, scoring at better than a run a minute as the Australian bowlers struggled for control. Johnson, the spearhead of the attack, could find neither direction or length to concede 53 from eight overs.

* Strauss won the toss and elected to bat. England picked Durham pace bowler Graham Onions in place of Monty Panesar while Australia kept faith with the side who outplayed the hosts in the drawn first test in Cardiff.
