MUMBAI (Reuters) - As one of Bollywood's most sought after actors, you would think Priyanka Chopra has enough on her plate but the 29-year-old is now making time to pursue another passion.
Chopra has signed up with Universal Music for her debut music album and spoke to Reuters about her new singing career.
Q: How did this music album deal come about?
A: "It happened a year ago when Salim-Sulaiman (music directors) said they wanted me to meet someone from Universal. I have always been asked by music directors to sing songs for my films, but I didn't want to do it so randomly. I wanted it to do it right, and I wanted to do it at the right time, and this seemed like the right time."
Q: What kind of music will you be doing?
A: "Well, I am a huge fan of pop music, so that is what my album will have. It will be pop centric music. I am still working on it, writing my music, so I don't know when it will be out. Music is an organic thing; you can't put timelines to it."
Q: Have you always been into music?
A: "Always. I have trained in western classical singing and I practise pretty regularly. People around me know that I enjoy it a lot and I have always been asked to sing for my films, but I didn’t want a single to be my first foray into singing."
Q: Music will require a lot of commitment. How will you balance that with films?
A: "They both require a lot of commitment. And I love my films; there is no way that I am giving that up. But I am sure that I can balance both. I don't have to choose between the two. Films have always been a priority. That will continue."
Q: Your father is a singer. How much will he be involved in your album?
A: "He is so happy right now. I can see the excitement on his face when I talk about it and when I was signing up for this. So he's a proud papa right now. He's always been into music, so I keep asking him for advice, throw ideas off him. He is a singer, and I am living his dream right now."
Q: Any musical idols?
A: "My dad. I grew up in a house where music was big, and he's taught me a lot. My love for music comes from him. So he is definitely my idol when it comes to music."
