Taiwan's PC maker Wistron plans Vietnam plant-media
TAIPEI, March 29 (Reuters) - Taiwan's Wistron Corp (3231.TW: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to start building a notebook PC factory in Vietnam by the fourth quarter, with initial investment of about $10 million, local media reported on Saturday.
Wistron's board passed a multi-faceted investment plan for Vietnam at its board meeting on Friday, the Chinese language Commercial Times reported, without citing sources.
The $21.7 million investment plan is one of the largest ever for Wistron, one of Taiwan's smaller laptop makers.
The company is also planning to take along some of its upstream component suppliers, the Commercial Times said. It attributed the fourth-quarter timeline to market observers.
The move would mark the latest venture by Taiwan's massive PC-making complex into Vietnam.
Others that have announced plans for PC plants in the Southeast Asian nation include Hon Hai Precision (2317.TW: Quote, Profile, Research), Taiwan's largest electronics maker, and Compal Electronics (2324.TW: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's second largest contract laptop maker, which is building a $500 million complex.
