TOKYO, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average rose 1 percent on Tuesday, the first full trading day of 2009, with exporters such as Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) gaining after the yen slid against the dollar.

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it plans to halt production at all of its plants in Japan for a total of 11 days in February and March in response to flagging auto sales, but shares rose despite this.

The benchmark Nikkei .N225 gained 74.46 points to 9,117.58, while the broader TOPIX .TOPX rose 0.7 percent to 881.73. (Reporting by Elaine Lies)
