NEW YORK, June 4 (Reuters) - Sterling was down more than 1 percent against the dollar on Thursday in choppy trading.

The pound earlier fell sharply on speculation British Prime Minister Gordon Brown would resign, which his office dismissed as "absolute nonsense."

In midday trading, sterling dropped 1.1 percent to $1.6116 GBP=D4. (Reporting by Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss; Editing by James Dalgleish)
