Sybase buys a Cable & Wireless mobile data unit

NEW YORK, July 8 (Reuters) - Sybase Inc (SY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it bought a Cable & Wireless Plc (CW.L: Quote, Profile, Research) business that helps mobile phone users around the world exchange text and picture messages with people in other countries.

Sybase did not disclose the terms of the all-cash deal and said it was not expected to to have a material impact on its 2008 financial results.

Sybase, which passes on text messages between different carriers networks, also gained exclusive worldwide rights from Cable & Wireless to sell a mobile data roaming service which supports continued use of data services like mobile Web for subscribers roaming beyond their home network.
