Total mulls dismantling of Dunkirk refinery-report

PARIS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Total's (TOTF.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) 160,000 barrels-per-day Dunkirk refinery, which temporarily stopped in mid-September due to poor fuel demand, is likely to be dismantled, a French weekly said on Monday. Total declined to comment on the press report from the economical and political newsletter, La lettre de l'Expansion, which did not identify sources.

The French major said at the start of the month a lack of fuel demand had forced the temporary closure of the Dunkirk refinery whithout specifying the duration.

Total, which has the largest oil refining capacity in Europe, also closed in August one of two atmospheric crude distillation units at its Gonfreville refinery in northwest France because of slumping demand in oil products.

Refinery run cuts have been spread across Europe this year.

Total's Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie said earlier this month Total was mulling selling assets in the refining sector but that nothing would be announced before deals were finalised.   Continued...
