UPDATE 1-EXCLUSIVE-Xstrata Copper eyes strong growth in Peru
(Adds details)
SANTIAGO, April 8 (Reuters) - Xstrata Copper will likely boost its output of the red metal in Peru to up to 500,000 tonnes over the next five years if all goes as planned and it gets its Antapaccay and Las Bambas projects into production.
Jose Marun, the chief operating officer for Xstrata Copper's recently created Southern Peru division, told Reuters the figure did not include output from its stake in the Antamina mine.
Including its one-third stake in Antamina, Marun said the company would produce 240,000 tonnes of copper in Peru this year, roughly in line with output in 2007.
Expansion in Peru will be driven by Antapaccay and Las Bambas, which if brought into production will have output of about 150,000 tonnes and about 200,000 tonnes, respectively.
Marun said Antapaccay, which could share infrastructure with the company's Tintaya mine, would likely cost about $1.5 billion to bring to production.
He said Las Bambas, which would have significant infrastructure challenges to overcome -- like bringing roads and power to the site -- would cost about $3 billion to develop. (Reporting by Pav Jordan and Antonio de la Jara, Editing by Simon Gardner and Christian Wiessner)
