WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - Democrats are prepared to work with President George W. Bush to bring a free trade pact with Colombia to a vote in the House of Representatives once more pressing domestic economic concerns are addressed, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday.
"We believe it is possible to bring the Colombia free trade agreement to the floor under the proper circumstances, but first we need to address the worsening economy," Pelosi told reporters, responding to Bush's comment earlier on Monday that the agreement was "dead" until Pelosi scheduled a vote for it.
Democrats want to talk with Bush about conditions for bringing the free trade pact to the floor, Pelosi said.
"We are asking the president to once again to bring his people to the table so we can move forward," Pelosi said at a brief news conference.
Pelosi did not take questions from reporters, and gave no precise timetable for a vote on the pact.
However, she made clear it took a back seat to legislation to help Americans cope with current U.S. economic woes, such as high gasoline prices and the housing credit crisis.
Last week, the House of Representatives voted to indefinitely delay action on the trade pact, rather than abide by longstanding "fast-track" trade law provisions that require Congress to approve or reject trade deals within 90 days.
Bush earlier on Monday said House Democrats had "stiffed" a crucial ally by voting to indefinitely delay the pact. Continued...
