FACTBOX-What German department store alliance could look like
May 20 (Reuters) - The world's fourth-largest retailer Metro (MEOG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and its German rival Arcandor (AROG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) were set to meet on Thursday to discuss potential cooperation of their department store chains. [ID:nLK76429]
Here is how analysts say the alliance could turn out:
SIZE
The department store alliance would combine up to 141 Kaufhof and up to 120 Karstadt Stores. LBBW credit analyst Stefan Schmitz estimated that the new group with about 200 stores could generate about 5.5 billion euros ($7.50 billion) in sales annually.
JOBS
The new group could employ about 35,000 staff, LBBW's Schmitz said in a note, which would be far less than the two chains employ today. Kaufhof has about 22,000 staff in Germany and Karstadt about 30,000.
