Experimental J&J drug works in resistant TB -study
BOSTON, June 3 (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) experimental drug designed to starve the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis is five times more effective than older drugs at treating people with drug-resistant TB, doctors reported on Wednesday.
The company-run study found that the drug TMC207, if added to a standard cocktail of five other TB medicines, cleared traces of the tuberculosis bacteria in the sputum of 48 percent of the volunteers after eight weeks. Only 9 percent of placebo recipients showed that type of improvement.
