LISBON, April 28 (Reuters) - Portuguese power company EDP (EDP.LS: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it increased output across all business areas in the first quarter of 2008, helped by the acquisition of U.S. wind-farm company Horizon Energy last year.
In provisional results for the first quarter, EDP said output from wind power grew 38 percent year-on-year and production in Iberia's liberalised market Mibel rose by 4.3 percent.
EDP also said output from its combined cycle gas turbines (CCGTS) in the first three months of the year increased 90 percent in Iberia compared with the same period last year.
However, energy volumes distributed in Portugal and Spain declined slightly due to mild temperatures and fewer working days.
"As a result, volume of electricity distributed by EDP showed a 0.4 percent decline year-on-year while the volume of gas distributed by EDP rose just by 0.8 percent year-on-year in 1Q08," EDP said in a statement.
It added that "both in electricity and gas distribution the number of clients connected continued to show a sustained growth."
EDP's electricity distribution in Brazil rose 2.3 percent on the back of a 4.0 percent rise in the number of clients connected to its network. The company operates in Brazil through its subsidiary Energias do Brasil (ENBR3.SA: Quote, Profile, Research). Continued...
