Universal Sports reaches deal to air Giro d'Italia
NEW YORK, May 8 (Reuters) - Universal Sports has reached a multi-year deal to broadcast the Giro d'Italia, the world's second-biggest bicycling stage race, the company said on Friday.
Universal Sports, a venture between NBC Sports and InterMedia Partners, will begin U.S. coverage of the centenary edition of the Giro on May 9, when the team time trial will take place on the Lido in Venice.
This year's race, in which Lance Armstrong will compete as part of his return to professional cycling after over three years in retirement, will finish on May 31 in Rome. Universal Sports is available in 45 million U.S. homes.
As part of the deal, Universal Sports will provide TV and online coverage, including archived video and television rebroadcasts, for the 2009-2012 Giro races. Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
NBC sports is jointly owned by General Electric Co (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Vivendi (VIV.PA: Quote, Profile, Research).
