LONDON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - England's top flight teams could be playing league matches overseas starting in the 2010-11 season after all 20 clubs agreed on Thursday to examine a proposal released by the Premier League.

Under the plan the league season, which is currently 38 matches, would be extended to 39 with an international round of fixtures involving all 20 clubs staged in January.

"We are proud the Premier League is viewed as the strongest domestic football competition in the world by fans at home and abroad, and we are committed to maintaining this position," chief executive Richard Scudamore said in a statement.

"The international round is an exciting and innovative proposal that needs careful consideration before being introduced," he added as the plan was unveiled on the Premier League's official Web site (www.premierleague.com)

However, the proposals would need the approval of soccer's world ruling body FIFA, along with the consent of Europe's UEFA, and senior sources within both organisations expressed their concern over the plans.

"This is no longer about football, it seems to be all about money," a senior UEFA official told Reuters, a view that was echoed by a senior FIFA source.

No further details of the plans were disclosed, although British media said it is likely matches would be played in the Far East, Australia and the United States.  Continued...
