Soccer-Rangers beat Celtic to go top in Scotland
LONDON, May 9 (Reuters) - Rangers beat Celtic 1-0 at Ibrox on Saturday to move two points clear of their Old Firm rivals at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
The only goal of a typically passionate derby came eight minutes before halftime when Steven Davis scored to lift Rangers on to 79 points -- two points clear of Celtic who are bidding for a fourth successive league title. Both sides have three matches to play.
The goal, which gave Rangers their sixth successive league win, came when Kenny Miller burst into space on the left, crossing into the path of Davis who volleyed it low into Celtic's net without breaking his stride.
He then made a clearance off his own goal line at the other end to deny Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink a Celtic equaliser.
Rangers manager Walter Smith told Setanta Sports: "I thought the whole team were superb today. We've got ourselves into the position we want to be in with three games to go and need to continue our winning run."
Celtic boss Gordon Strachan said his team played well, adding: "We did alright but we did not take our chances."
