GLASGOW, March 9 (Reuters) - Chris Burke sent Rangers into the Scottish Cup quarter-finals, scoring the winner in a fiery 1-0 victory over Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday.
The fiercely contested fifth-round replay erupted when Rangers substitute Nacho Novo and manager Walter Smith were sent off in the closing stages.
Earlier, holders Celtic earned a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay with Aberdeen when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink stabbed in a dramatic close-range stoppage time equaliser at Pittodrie.
Spanish striker Novo was dismissed on 79 minutes for a two-footed challenge on Hibs' Cameroon defender Thierry Gathuessi sparking fury on the sidelines.
Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen rushed out to protest at the tackle provoking an angry confrontation with Rangers boss Walter Smith, who was then sent to the stands by referee Craig Thomson.
Scotland midfielder Burke scored the winner after 39 minutes when he gathered a pass from Steve Davis on the right and cut inside to crash a rising 20-yard drive into the top left beyond Belgian goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay.
Rangers now meet second division Partick Thistle (II) on March 19 with the winners facing either second tier St Johnstone or Premier League strugglers St Mirren, who drew 1-1 on Saturday. Continued...
