BARCELONA, April 22 (Reuters) - Chevron Corp.'s (CVX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , plans to build a new continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) unit at its Pascagoula, Mississippi, refinery are on schedule, a senior executive said on Tuesday.

"Pascagoula is a jewel in our crown," Jeet Bindra, Chevron's President of Manufacturing said at a refining conference in Barcelona.

The CCR unit would boost gasoline output at the plant by 14,285 barrels per day. The work was expected to begin in early 2008, end in 2010, and cost $500 million.

Chevron scrapped a plan to build a 200,000 bpd crude unit at the refinery last month because costs were too high. Other refiners have said the uncertain demand outlook in the U.S. due to looming recession is also causing the sector to pause on expansions.

Bindra noted no new refineries had been built in the United States since 1976, but said new technology would help boost efficiency at existing plants.

"We have been able to do more with less," Bindra said.

Bindra added that Chevron had plans to expand its refining presence in Asia.

"Our U.S. plans do not mean we do not have plans to grow our business elsewhere, such as Korea, Singapore and Thailand," he said, without giving further details.
