FACTBOX - Israeli biomed innovations shoot for world market
REUTERS - Israel hosted a biomedical conference in Tel Aviv this week to showcase local innovations it hopes can find an international market.
Following are a few of the new technologies unveiled at the conference:
* CANCER-FIGHTING MINIATURE ROBOT
This robot, 1 milimetre in diameter, can crawl to hard-to-reach places in the body. Tiny legs that jut off on each side make the ViBot, look like a metal fly.
Researchers at Israel's Technion Institute of Technology say the ViBot can be used to deliver a targeted dose of medication to a tumour in a lung or clear a blockage in the brain, though it will be 5-10 years before such applications are plausible.
In the case of a cancerous tumour, the researchers envision the ViBot laying dormant inside the growth. And rather than injecting treatment or exposing themselves to radiation, the patient can activate the electromagnetic field and the specific dose of medication can be delivered on scene.
* NEEDLE-LESS BLOOD TEST
Hate being stuck by needles? The Israeli medical device company OrSense has begun to sell a machine to European hospitals which it says can measure vital blood levels, such as haemoglobin, without a pinprick. Continued...
