ZAGREB (Reuters) - Croatia said on Monday its first case of the H1N1 flu virus, reported earlier in the day in a patient who came from abroad last week, was wrongly confirmed.

"Due to a mistake in a laboratory in London, we received a wrong confirmation. Now I have a written apology saying that the test on the virus was negative," Health Minister Darko Milinovic told state television.

Earlier on Monday Milinovic said that a patient who had been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus had recovered and was back at work.

He also said that local tests had found no trace of the virus, but the announcement was made public after a laboratory in London confirmed the H1N1 virus was present.

"However, we were sent wrong documentation," Milinovic said.

Milinovic said that medical authorities would be on high alert in the coming months during the peak tourist season which usually brought large numbers of foreign travellers.
