Moncoutie wins Dauphine seventh stage, Valverde leads

SAINT-FRANCOIS-LONGCHAMP, France (Reuters) - Frenchman David Moncoutie won the seventh stage of the Dauphine Libere on Saturday while Spain's Alejandro Valverde retained the overall lead.

Dutchman Robert Gesink was second behind the Cofidis rider on the 157km stage over three Alpine passes from Briancon to the summit finish of Saint-Francois-Longchamp. Australian Cadel Evans finished third.

Valverde was fourth on the stage and remained the overall leader with just one day's racing remaining, with Evans in second place.

The Dauphine LIbere finishes on Sunday in Grenoble.
