U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. (U.S. Silica), incorporated on November 14, 2008, is a domestic producer of commercial silica, a specialized mineral that is an input into a range of end markets. The Company operates in two segments: Oil & Gas Proppants, and Industrial & Specialty Products. In its end market, oil and gas proppants, its frac sand is used to stimulate and maintain the flow of hydrocarbons in oil and natural gas wells. Its silica is also used as an irreplaceable raw material in a range of industrial applications, including glassmaking and chemical manufacturing. The Company operates approximately 20 production facilities across the United States and controls over 400 million tons of reserves, including approximately 222 million tons of reserves that can be processed to meet the American Petroleum Institute (API) frac sand size specifications. The Company produces and sells a range of commercial silica products, including whole grain and ground products, as well as other industrial mineral products.
The Company sells whole grain commercial silica products in a range of shapes, sizes and purity levels. It sells whole grain silica that has a round shape and high crush strength to be used as frac sand in connection with oil and natural gas recovery, and also produces resin coated sand. It also sells whole grain silica products in a range of size distributions, grain shapes and chemical purity levels to the Company's customers involved in the manufacturing of glass products, including a low-iron whole grain product sold to manufacturers of architectural and solar glass applications. In addition, the Company sells various grades of whole grain round silica to the foundry industry, and provides whole grain commercial silica to the building products industry.
The Company's ground commercial silica products are inherently inert, white and bright. The Company markets its ground silica in sizes ranging from 40 to 250 microns for use in plastics, rubber, polishes, cleansers, paints, glazes, textile fiberglass and precision castings. It also produces and markets ground silica in sizes ranging from 5 to 40 microns for use in paints, specialty coatings, sealants, silicone rubber and epoxies. The Company is a commercial silica producer in the United States that manufactures a five-micron product. The Company also produces and sells certain other industrial mineral products, such as aplite and magnesium silicate. It also produces and sells a selective adsorbent made from a mixture of silica and magnesium, used in preparative and analytical chromatography.
Oil and Gas Proppants
In the Oil & Gas Proppants segment, the Company serves the oil and gas recovery market providing fracturing sand, or frac sand, which is pumped down oil and natural gas wells to prop open rock fissures and manage the flow rate of natural gas and oil from the wells. Commercial silica is used as a proppant for oil and natural gas recovery in conventional and unconventional resource plays.
Industrial & Specialty Products
The Industrial & Specialty Products segment consists of over 250 products and materials. These products and materials are used in a range of industries, including, container glass, fiberglass, specialty glass, flat glass, building products, fillers and extenders, foundry products, chemicals, recreation products and filtration products.
The Company competes with Fairmount Santrol Holdings Inc., Unimin Corporation, Hi-Crush Partners LP and Emerge Energy Services LP.
