MEDIASET SpA is Italy-based communications and broadcasting group. The Company is engaged in signal broadcasting, in-house television production, acquiring film and drama rights and collecting advertising. It operates in seven business areas: Advertising, through Publitalia ’80 SpA; Analogue free-to-air generalist television, through RTI SpA, which manages Canale 5, Italia 1 and Retequattro; Broadcast infrastructure management; Free digital terrestrial thematic channels, including Boing and Iris; Pay-per-view digital terrestrial, including football, cinema, television series and events; Multimedia, mainly through Internet and mobile television, and Distance selling, through MediaShopping. The Company owns, among others, Mediaset Investimenti SpA, which manages the Group's investment portfolio and Mediaset Investment Sarl, which manages the Group's international activities. The Company has a majority stake in Gestevision Telecinco SA, the Spanish television group.
BRIEF: For the nine months ended 30 September 2009, MEDIASET SpA's total revenue decreased 11% to EUR2.65B. Net income from continuing operations decreased 48% to EUR184.7M. Total revenue reflects a decrease in demand for the Company's products and services in Italy and Spain. Net income from continuing operations suffered from a decrease in both gross and operating margins due to higher personnel expenses.
