Safaricom Limited (Safaricom) is engaged in the provision of mobile phone services. It provides products and services for telephony, general packet radio services (GPRS), third generation (3G), enhanced data GSM environment (EDGE), data and fax. Its Safaricom PrePay service includes international dialing, voice mail and prepays roaming. Messaging includes ways of communication, such as short message service (SMS), e-mail and multimedia. With messaging service, customer also get daily updates for news, sports and entertainment. Other products and services include Safaricom Shops and Safaricom Mail. In August 2009, the Company acquired a 100% interest in Packetstream Data Networks.
BRIEF: For the fiscal year ended 31 March 2009, Safaricom Limited's revenues increased 15% to KES58.8B. Net income decreased 24% to KES10.54B. Revenues reflect increased revenues from Voice Services, SMS & Data Services and Acquisition Services. Net income offset by higher operating expenses, increased selling, general & administrative expenses, a rise in depreciation & amortisation expenses and the presence of interest expense vs. an income.
