More violent clashes in Syria. Amateur video uploaded to social media websites by activists -- purportedly shows scores of marchers scattering as gunfire erupts in the city of Homs. The marchers had taken to the streets to rally against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. The video -- which cannot be verified by Reuters -- shows a police car left burning in the street. According to one witness, eight people were killed and at least one protester appeared to be seriously wounded as he is carried away by others. Syria has barred most international media since protests broke out two months ago, making it impossible to verify independently accounts from activists and officials. The deadly clashes in Homs occurred one day after U.S. President Obama -- in a speech at the State Department-- told President Assad to reform or step down. The U.S., which has condemned the crackdown by the Syrian government as barbaric, imposed targeted additional sanctions against Assad this week. Jon Decker, Reuters.
