French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy plays the perfect hostess - welcoming fellow spouses of G8 leaders to Deauville. She greets leaders' wives as they arrive at the historic Villa Strassburger, while her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, officially opens the 2011 Group of Eight summit. Not all wives were present, but Bruni received the Canadian and Russian first ladies, as well as the wives of several senior EU officials. They were expected to have lunch together before taking part in a working session on the subject of illiteracy. The French presidential palace has not confirmed rumors that Bruni is pregnant, but last week President Sarkozy's father told a German newspaper that she is expecting a child.
