Syrian refugees flood into Turkey

June 14 - More than 8,500 Syrians have sought shelter across the border to escape President Bashar al-Assad's latest military drive to crush protests demanding political change. Jon Decker reports.

Syrian troops using tanks and helicopters pushed northwards on Tuesday after arresting hundreds of people in villages Iin the northwestern part of the country. Pictures from a private Turkish television station showed villagers on Sunday loading their belongings into pick-up trucks and fleeing to escape the crackdown. More than 8,500 Syrians have sought shelter across the border to escape President Bashar al-Assad's latest military drive to crush protests demanding political change. Turkey has set up four refugee camps just inside its borders. In addition, Turkey's Red Crescent dispatched humanitarian aid to scores of fleeing families seeking shelter on the Syrian side of the border with Turkey. Syrian rights groups say more than 1,300 civilians have been killed since the start of the uprising in March. Jon Decker, Reuters.
