June 27 - Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann announces her candidacy, saying the U.S. ''cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama.'' Deborah Gembara reports.

Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann made it official on Monday -- she's joining the race for the White House. SOUNDBITE: Michele Bachmann, Republican presidential contender saying: "My name is Michele Bachmann and I stand here amidst many friends and family to announce my candidacy for president of the United States" The former tax attorney enjoys broad support from Tea Party Republicans and has been an outspoken critic of the Obama administration. SOUNDBITE: Michele Bachmann, Republican presidential contender saying: "We can't afford four more years of a failed foreign policy with a president who leads from behind and who doesn't stand up for our friends like Israel... and who to often fails to stand against our enemies. We can't afford four more years of Americans out of work. We cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama." A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Bachmann could have a an edge in the increasingly crowded race for the chance to challenge President Obama next year. Iowa hosts the first caucus of the election season and is considered make or break for many candidates. Deborah Gembara, Reuters.
