REUTERS IS UNABLE TO VERIFY SOME OF THE CONTENT OF THIS VIDEO WHICH HAS BEEN OBTAINED FROM A SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE This video posted online appears to show men with sticks beating people on the streets of the Syrian city of Deir Al Zour. Men wearing military uniform do not seem to stop the attacks. Those posting the footage say the victims are innocent civilians. Another video shows a house that appears to be ransacked. It was allegedly destroyed by members of President Bashar al-Assad's security forces. Reuters is unable to independently verify the footage. Human rights campaigners say Assad's forces have stormed major urban centres since the beginning Ramadan on August 1. The authorities have expelled most independent media making verification of such claims difficult. But protest videos continue to be posted on social media websites. This one shows a sign thanking Al Jazeera for airing video of the demonstrations. U.S. President Barack Obama and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah have repeated their calls for the military assaults to stop. Washington is calling on Europe and China to consider sanctions on Syrian oil, a key source of hard currency for the ruling hierarchy. Lily Grimes, Reuters
