PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL Israel promised a swift and mighty response to Thursdays deadly attacks by gunmen. It made good on that promise with air strikes on Rafah and Gaza City. Early on Friday Israeli aircraft hit what Gaza residents say were three compounds controlled by Gaza's ruling Hamas Islamist group. Medical officials said a 13-year-old Palestinian boy in a nearby building was killed. Some 17 other people have been wounded. An earlier strike on the southern Gaza town of Rafah targeted another militant group, the Popular Resistance Committees. Its commander, his deputy and three other members were killed in the raid on a house. Local Palestinians said the nine-year-old son of the owner of the building also died. The PRC is vowing what it called double revenge for the attack. The latest bloodshed followed attacks on Thursday near Eilat in which eight Israelis were killed. Gunmen opened fire on Israeli vehicles close to the border with Egypt's Sinai desert. Israel said six civilians and two soldiers lost their lives in the attacks on two buses, a car and an army vehicle. It said seven gunmen were killed including two who blew themselves up in suicide attacks. Israeli officials have voiced concern that militant groups may have been making use of a security vacuum left by the overthrow of Egypt's president in February. Paul Chapman, Reuters
